The story
Based on a 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the Paris Opera House.
Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of the young soprano Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her.
When Christine's childhood sweetheart comes back into her life, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.
The music
Crashing chords, luscious melodies, soaring high notes - Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score is dizzyingly intoxicating.
It’s packed with songs famous the whole world over, including The Phantom’s seductive solo "The Music of the Night", Christine and Raoul’s "All I Ask of You", "Masquerade" and the title song, with its thundering chromatic chords.
The original cast recording of The Phantom of the Opera is one of the biggest musical theatre albums ever. It was the first in British musical history to enter the charts at Number One, and has been certified three times Platinum in the UK.

The 2015 DYMT production of The Phantom of the Opera at Derby Guildhall was critically acclaimed as "a towering presentation of this Lloyd Webber classic", "the whole company gave an exceptional performance, fully justifying the standing ovation at the finale" and "an unmissable show from the young performers".
Our show gained a National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) award for the best youth musical of the year and an Eagle Award, celebrating the wealth of amateur theatre in Derby and Derbyshire, in the category of Best Musical.
And it'll be even more spectacular in November 2024!
In November 2024, the DYMT production of The Phantom of the Opera at Derby Theatre promises to be even more spectacular. It will be on a bigger stage, with a larger set, enhanced with a live 18 piece orchestra and thrilling even bigger audiences!
Tickets will go on sale in early summer.
